We love Dollywood.
But when our family visited in March, we learned something about visiting a mostly outdoor theme park in the Smoky Mountains: the weather can have other plans.
It was freezing. Really freezing.
Cold temperatures meant several attractions couldn’t operate right away, while others had delayed openings as we waited for temperatures to rise. We still had a wonderful trip. Dollywood’s food, live entertainment and atmosphere gave us plenty to enjoy even when some rides weren’t running. But we distinctly remember wishing the park had another substantial indoor attraction where our family could escape the weather and still have a major theme park experience.
Well, Dollywood apparently got the memo.
On August 19, 2026, Dollywood officially opens NightFlight Expedition, a massive new indoor attraction in Wildwood Grove that is unlike anything currently operating at another theme park.
And we cannot wait to get back to Dollywood to ride it.
NightFlight Expedition isn’t simply another roller coaster added to an already impressive coaster lineup. Dollywood calls it the world’s first indoor family hybrid coaster and whitewater river raft ride, combining four different ride experiences inside one climate-controlled attraction.
For families, that combination matters.
What Is NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood?
NightFlight Expedition is a completely indoor, immersive family attraction that sends guests on an expedition through the Smoky Mountains in search of a mysterious bioluminescent phenomenon.
The attraction was created by Dollywood, Herschend Creative Studios and MACK Rides using a specially designed amphibious ride vehicle. The vehicle interacts with multimedia projections, onboard and offboard audio, lighting effects and physical ride elements throughout the experience.
But here’s where things get really interesting.
During the approximately 5½-minute experience, the same attraction takes riders through four different adventures:
- Soaring over the Smoky Mountains
- Plunging through whitewater rapids
- Climbing and traveling along a mountain ridge as a roller coaster
- Navigating a mysterious bioluminescent lake
The whitewater portion alone uses more than 500,000 gallons of water.
This isn’t a coaster with a splashdown at the end. And it isn’t simply a raft ride with a few coaster-like elements.
It’s an entirely new ride system designed to move between these different experiences as part of one continuous story.
MACK Rides actually received Amusement Today’s 2025 Golden Ticket Award for Best New Innovation for the ride system being used on NightFlight Expedition.
NightFlight Expedition by the Numbers
Dollywood has released some helpful statistics that give families a better idea of what to expect:
Minimum height: 39 inches
Maximum speed: 29 mph
Ride length: 1,255 feet
Ride duration: Approximately 5½ minutes, including loading and unloading

And then there’s one more number:
$50 million.
NightFlight Expedition represents an investment of more than $50 million and is the largest single attraction investment in Dollywood history.
Dollywood clearly isn’t treating this as a small addition.
That 39-Inch Height Requirement Is a Big Deal for Families
As parents, one of the first things we check when a new attraction is announced isn’t its top speed.
It’s the height requirement.
And 39 inches immediately caught our attention.
NightFlight Expedition isn’t being designed exclusively for older kids and adults who love major thrill rides. Dollywood describes it as a moderate-thrill attraction intended for families as well as thrill seekers.
That makes this a substantial new attraction that many younger children may actually be tall enough to experience.
But here’s our usual parent caveat: being tall enough to ride and being ready to ride are not necessarily the same thing.
NightFlight Expedition includes darkness, multimedia effects, whitewater, coaster movement and an immersive storyline. Some adventurous younger kids may think that sounds fantastic. More cautious children may need a little more time.
We always recommend looking beyond the number on the measuring stick and considering your individual child.
The Indoor Part May Be Just as Important as the Ride Technology
This is one of the aspects of NightFlight Expedition that we think could be easy to overlook.
The entire attraction is housed inside a 44,000-square-foot, climate-controlled facility and is designed to operate independently of outside weather conditions.
After our March visit, that sounds pretty wonderful.
Dollywood itself warns guests that during colder parts of the year and inclement weather, some rides and attractions can only operate above certain temperatures. We experienced exactly that.
And cold isn’t the only issue.
Visit Tennessee in the summer and families can encounter heat and thunderstorms. Visit during the colder months and temperatures can affect outdoor ride operations. That’s simply part of operating a largely outdoor theme park in the mountains.
NightFlight Expedition gives Dollywood something it genuinely needed: a major indoor family attraction.
Not a shop. Not somewhere to sit for a few minutes. A legitimate headliner that families can experience together while getting completely out of the weather.
We already loved Dollywood before this attraction existed, but this fills a noticeable hole in the park’s lineup.
Dollywood Didn’t Just Need Another Coaster
Dollywood already knows how to build roller coasters.
Its lineup ranges from serious thrill rides to attractions designed for families, including Big Bear Mountain in Wildwood Grove.
So another traditional coaster, even a really good one, wouldn’t necessarily change the park in the same way.
NightFlight Expedition does.
It adds another attraction for families with younger riders. It adds a major indoor experience. It brings sophisticated ride technology to the park. And instead of simply trying to build something taller or faster, Dollywood is using technology to create an entirely different kind of attraction.
That’s important because Dollywood may not always be the first name families associate with cutting-edge theme park technology.
Maybe it should get a little more credit.
Disney and Universal Families Shouldn’t Overlook Dollywood
We love the big theme park destinations. But if your family automatically thinks Disney or Universal whenever someone suggests a theme park vacation, don’t discount Dollywood.
No, Dollywood doesn’t have the enormous library of intellectual property behind it that Disney and Universal do.
There are no superheroes or wizards waiting around the corner.
What Dollywood has built instead is something very much its own.
The park combines major roller coasters and family attractions with Smoky Mountain culture, craftsmen, festivals, Southern food and an unusually strong emphasis on live entertainment.
And this isn’t simply marketing.
Dollywood has accumulated an impressive collection of industry awards. At the 2025 Golden Ticket Awards, the park earned Best Guest Experience, Best Kids’ Area and Best Family Coaster. It ranked third for Best Park and third for Most Beautiful Park. Its Christmas event became so dominant after 15 consecutive Best Christmas Event wins that the Golden Ticket Awards retired the category and designated Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas a legend.
The park’s entertainment pedigree is equally impressive. Dollywood has repeatedly been recognized by the Golden Ticket Awards for its live shows.
Having experienced Dollywood ourselves, we understand the praise.
The food and live entertainment are genuinely hard to beat.
Those things also matter when you’re traveling with a family. Not everyone wants to spend an entire vacation running from roller coaster to roller coaster.
Sometimes Grandpa wants a show. Someone else wants cinnamon bread. One child wants the coaster. Another wants to explore Wildwood Grove.
Dollywood does that kind of multigenerational vacation remarkably well.
Dollywood Can Be More Than a One-Day Theme Park Stop
Dollywood is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in the Great Smoky Mountains, which gives families another advantage: the theme park doesn’t have to carry the entire vacation.
You can build a larger Smoky Mountains trip around it.
Dollywood also has two beautiful onsite resort options, Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa and Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort. Resort guests with park tickets receive benefits that currently include complimentary TimeSaver passes, priority attraction access during the first hour, preferred parking and trolley transportation to the parks.
During warmer months, families can also add Dollywood’s Splash Country, the resort’s 35-acre water park.
That gives families the pieces for a real destination vacation:
A major theme park.
A water park.
Two onsite resorts.
The Great Smoky Mountains.
Pigeon Forge and nearby Gatlinburg.
And plenty to do beyond theme parks.
That flexibility can also make a Smoky Mountains trip an appealing alternative for families who aren’t looking to commit an entire week to a massive theme park resort.
Is NightFlight Expedition Worth Planning a Dollywood Trip Around?
We haven’t ridden it yet, so we’re not going to give you a ride review until we actually do.
But based on what Dollywood has revealed, NightFlight Expedition makes an already compelling family destination considerably stronger.
The attraction checks several boxes that matter to us as parents.
It has a relatively accessible 39-inch height requirement. It’s designed as a moderate thrill rather than an extreme coaster. It’s completely indoors. It’s weather independent. It lasts considerably longer than many traditional coaster experiences. And its unusual ride system offers something families can’t simply experience at another U.S. theme park.
Most importantly, it addresses something we noticed firsthand during our own Dollywood vacation.
We already loved this park.
We loved the food. We loved the entertainment. We loved its personality. We loved that it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to copy Disney or Universal.
But standing in the cold during our March trip while waiting for outdoor attractions to begin operating made one thing pretty obvious:
Dollywood needed a major indoor attraction.
Now it has one.

NightFlight Expedition gives families one more reason not to overlook Dollywood.
Disney and Universal may have the blockbuster characters and enormous intellectual properties, but Dollywood continues to prove that a great family theme park doesn’t need them.
Between award-winning attractions, excellent food, some of the best live entertainment we’ve experienced at a theme park, beautiful resorts, Splash Country and the Great Smoky Mountains just outside the gates, Dollywood has become a destination capable of anchoring an entire family vacation.
And now the park is adding a groundbreaking indoor attraction that many younger members of the family can actually ride.
That’s a pretty compelling combination.
We can’t wait to get back to Dollywood, climb aboard NightFlight Expedition and see for ourselves whether this unusual new attraction lives up to the hype.
Something tells us this won’t be our last trip to the Smokies.
