One of the biggest questions families ask about Universal Kids Resort is whether it is worth staying at the Universal Kids Resort Hotel.
The answer has never been quite as simple as yes or no.
The colorful 300 room hotel sits just steps from the park entrance, making it incredibly convenient for families with young children. Hotel guests also receive several exclusive park benefits. But because there are plenty of other hotels throughout Frisco, families still have to decide whether staying directly at Universal Kids Resort is worth the additional cost for their particular trip.
Now Universal is giving us another reason to watch the hotel experience.
A special Doozie’s Doghouse event coming to Universal Kids Resort October 23 through 25 will include an exclusive Friday night pool party for hotel guests before activities begin inside the theme park over the weekend.
It is the first hotel exclusive event of this type we have seen at Universal Kids Resort, and while we would not book a stay based on one pool party alone, we like the direction Universal appears to be exploring.
What perks do Universal Kids Resort Hotel guests already receive?
The biggest hotel benefit remains Early Park Admission.
Guests staying at Universal Kids Resort Hotel can enter the park one hour before it opens to the general public. Valid theme park admission is still required, and Early Park Admission applies to select lands and attractions.
For families trying to accomplish as much as possible before crowds build, that extra hour can be valuable.
Hotel guests also receive a dedicated entrance to Universal Kids Resort, another small convenience that can make mornings easier when traveling with young children.
There is also complimentary merchandise delivery. Purchases made inside Universal Kids Resort can be delivered directly to the hotel, meaning parents do not necessarily have to carry shopping bags around the park for the rest of the day.
Hotel guests can also use their room key for resort wide charging privileges, making it easier to make purchases throughout Universal Kids Resort without carrying an additional payment method.
And then there is probably the most obvious benefit of all: location.
Universal Kids Resort Hotel sits immediately beside the theme park. If someone needs a break, a change of clothes or simply some downtime away from the park, getting back to the hotel is considerably easier than loading everyone into a vehicle and driving somewhere else.
None of those benefits are new. What is becoming more interesting is what Universal may be adding around them.

During a recent visit to Universal Kids Resort Hotel, we noticed another fun surprise in the lobby.
Poppy from DreamWorks’ Trolls was meeting guests during scheduled times inside the hotel.
At this point, it is not clear how frequently these hotel character appearances take place. They may vary by day, weekend or season, and characters and appearance times can always change. We are continuing to look into the schedule and will update our coverage as we learn more.
Still, it is exactly the type of small addition that makes staying on site feel different from simply booking a room somewhere nearby.
Universal has also been adding seasonal touches around the hotel, giving guests a little more of the resort experience even when they are outside the park.
Now the upcoming Doozie event takes that idea another step.
Universal Kids Resort Hotel guests get an exclusive Doozie event
DreamWorks is bringing Doozie, Gabby’s little sister from the upcoming Doozie’s Doghouse series, to Universal Kids Resort for a special event weekend October 23 through 25.
The celebration actually takes place in two parts. On Friday, October 23, Universal Kids Resort Hotel guests can attend a themed pool party from 7 to 10 p.m., weather permitting. (Hotel guests can also say the secret code “Doozie” at check in to receive an exclusive towel while supplies last.)
Then on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, the event moves inside Universal Kids Resort from noon to 6 p.m.
Weekend activities are expected to include:
- A sneak peek at the new Doozie’s Doghouse series
- A meet and greet with Doozie
- Themed crafts, games and activities
- Treats while supplies last
- A scavenger hunt
Doozie’s character appearance is currently scheduled only for October 24 and 25 from noon to 6 p.m. and is subject to change.
The Friday evening pool party is the part that especially caught our attention.
Families staying at Universal Kids Resort Hotel are receiving an additional experience that visitors staying elsewhere will not have access to.
That does not suddenly make the hotel a must book for every family. It does, however, add something new to the conversation about whether staying on site is worth it.
Who is Doozie?
If your family already knows Gabby’s Dollhouse, Doozie may look familiar. She is Gabby’s younger sister and is now getting her own DreamWorks series, Doozie’s Doghouse.
The new mixed media preschool series premieres November 9 on Netflix and expands the world of Gabby’s Dollhouse with a more puppy focused adventure. Doozie is joined by her best puppy friend, Puggie, and a group known as the Doozie Dogs as they use imaginative play to take on everything from pretending to be doctors and secret agents to fashion shows and other adventures. Gabby and the Gabby Cats will also appear in the new series.
That makes the October event at Universal Kids Resort more than simply another character appearance. It is also a promotion for Doozie’s Doghouse just a few weeks before the series premieres.
Guests attending the Universal Kids Resort event will be among the first to meet Doozie in person and will also get a sneak peek at the new series.
For Universal Kids Resort, the partnership makes a lot of sense. Gabby’s Dollhouse already has a significant presence inside the park’s Isle of Curiosity, including a Gabby character experience.
Do these extras make Universal Kids Resort Hotel worth it?
We still think families should look at the entire cost of their trip before automatically choosing the Universal hotel.
Frisco has plenty of hotel options, and depending on your travel dates, staying elsewhere may save a significant amount of money.
A character in the lobby or an occasional special event should not outweigh a large price difference.
But the equation starts looking different when several benefits are stacked together.
You have Early Park Admission. You have a dedicated entrance. You can walk between the hotel and the park. Purchases can be delivered back to your hotel. We are now seeing character appearances in the lobby, seasonal touches and, at least for one weekend, an exclusive special event for hotel guests.
For a family planning a short trip primarily around Universal Kids Resort, those conveniences and experiences can have real value.
And because Universal Kids Resort is designed specifically for families with younger children, convenience may matter even more here than it does at some larger destination theme parks. Being able to quickly return to the room for a break can be pretty appealing when a preschooler has decided the day is officially over.
Is Universal building more hotel exclusive experiences?
That is the question we will be watching.
The Doozie pool party is the first special hotel guest event like this that we have seen since Universal Kids Resort opened. There is no indication yet that these events will become regular hotel offerings, and families should not book a future stay expecting them.
But we are glad to see Universal experimenting with experiences that give hotel guests something beyond the standard park benefits.
We will be particularly interested to see what happens as Universal Kids Resort moves into the holiday season.
Will additional characters appear at the hotel? Will seasonal entertainment expand? Could other special event weekends include something extra for guests staying on site?
We simply do not know yet.
But if Universal continues adding little extras around the hotel experience, it could make the decision to stay at Universal Kids Resort Hotel increasingly interesting for families who want their trip to extend beyond the park gates.
